Wimbledon 2003 This year's Wimbledon could set a new trend and Federer, Swiss and 21 years old, came to take his first Grand Slam in his tennis career. He is an emerging star and we could well find that he dominates the Grand Slams in years to come possibly accompanied by Roddick (USA) who is another young player with a great deal of promise unfortunatly only making the semi-final at Wimbledon. Tim Henman, the British number one, did well and is confident that he will be able to return to Wimbledon and win in the near future even with the new competition. Agassi (USA) says that he will return to the competition in 2004 and was beaten by Mark Philippoussis (Austratlia) who was only stopped by Federer in the final. The final was over in three sets with two tiebreaks, both lost by Philipoussis. It demolition by Federer who was playing in his first final unlike the Australian who had one previous experience. Philipoussis' serve (128mph second serve) could not get him out of trouble and although Federer did have some trouble breaking it, his own serving was up to a high standard. Federer played an excellent tournament loosing only one set throughout. Said Federer, "The semi and final were perhaps the best two games of my career," and it is easy to see why. The score: 7-6 (7/5) 6-2 7-6 (7/3). In the women's Serena Williams (USA) won the competition beating her sister Venus and confirming here number one spot after beating Kim Clijsters (ranked number 2) in the semi-final. Lleyton Hewitt (Australia), seeded number one, was knocked out very early on in the men's and we are looking forward to next year when he may come up against Federer. |
